Wedding Dress Codes Explained (for Australian Weddings)
Black tie, formal, cocktail, lounge suit, smart casual and beach: what each wedding dress code means for women and men, plus heat, grass and sand.
In short
A wedding dress code tells guests how dressed up to be. From most to least formal, the ones you'll see in Australia are black tie, formal (or black tie optional), cocktail, lounge suit, smart casual and casual or beach. Cocktail is the most common. If you're the couple, pick one, put it on your website with a line about the setting ("the ceremony is on the lawn"), and your guests will get it right.

Below is what each code means for women and men, what Australian weather and venues change, and wording you can copy.
The dress codes, most formal first
| Dress code | Women | Men | Typical wedding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black tie | Floor-length gown | Tuxedo, bow tie | Evening, ballroom or grand venue |
| Formal / black tie optional | Long gown or an elegant midi | Tuxedo or a dark suit and tie | Evening, city venue |
| Cocktail | Knee to midi-length dress, a dressy jumpsuit | Suit and tie (tie optional in summer) | Most weddings |
| Lounge suit | Cocktail dress, smart separates | Suit, tie optional | Daytime, winery, restaurant |
| Smart casual | Sundress, skirt and top, smart pants | Chinos or tailored pants, collared shirt, blazer optional | Relaxed daytime, backyard |
| Casual / beach | Light summer dress, flat sandals | Linen shirt, light pants or smart shorts | Beach, garden, barbecue |
White tie is the one above black tie: tails and full-length gowns. You'll almost never see it at an Australian wedding, so if you're tempted, say so very clearly.
Black tie
The most formal code you're likely to use. Women wear a floor-length gown; men wear a tuxedo (dinner suit) with a bow tie, a white dress shirt and black shoes. Guests will expect an evening event, a proper dinner and dancing, so it suits a ballroom, a historic building or a grand city venue.
If you choose black tie for a summer evening, expect some guests to hire a tuxedo, and give them plenty of notice.
Formal, or black tie optional
A step down: tuxedos are welcome but a well-cut dark suit and tie is just as right. Women can wear a long gown, a dressy midi or an elegant jumpsuit. This is a good choice when you want an evening to feel special without asking everyone to hire formalwear.
Cocktail
The most popular dress code at Australian weddings. Women wear a knee- to midi-length dress, a dressy jumpsuit or smart separates; men wear a suit, usually with a tie. It works for an afternoon ceremony running into an evening reception, which is most weddings.
Lounge suit
A very Australian term, and a common source of confusion. It means a suit, not a tuxedo, and it doesn't mean "lounge around". Men wear a suit with a tie optional; women dress as they would for cocktail. It suits a daytime wedding at a winery, a restaurant or a function room.
Smart casual
Dressed up from everyday, but no suits required. For women: a sundress, a skirt and blouse, or smart pants and a nice top. For men: chinos or tailored pants, a collared shirt, a blazer if they like, and no thongs. Say it if you mean it: some guests will still turn up in a suit, which is fine.
Casual and beach
For a beach, a garden or a backyard. Light dresses, linen shirts, smart shorts and flat sandals. Tell guests about the ground: "we're on the sand, so leave the heels at home" saves a lot of sinking.
What Australian weather and venues change
- Summer heat. An outdoor ceremony in January sun is hard work in a three-piece suit. A later ceremony helps; our wedding day timeline shows how a 4pm start fits the day. Say "jackets optional for the ceremony", put out water and fans, and consider shade for older guests.
- Sun protection. For a daytime outdoor ceremony, tell guests to bring sunglasses and a hat, and keep sunscreen at the entrance.
- Grass and sand. Stilettos sink into lawns and sand. "Block heels or flats" is a kind line to add for a garden or beach.
- Winter in the south. A Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart or Blue Mountains wedding in July can be cold outside. Mention wraps, coats or an indoor ceremony.
- The tropics. In the north, humidity and storms in the wet season mean light fabrics and a back-up plan.
- Wineries and paddocks. Expect uneven ground and gravel paths. Comfortable shoes beat pretty ones.
Etiquette guests ask about
- Wearing white or cream. Still best left to the couple, unless the couple asks for it.
- Black. Fine at most modern weddings, especially in the evening.
- Cultural weddings. At many Indian weddings, guests avoid white and black and wear bright colours (our Indian wedding invitation guide covers telling guests about each event); at some religious ceremonies, guests cover their shoulders or heads. If your wedding has customs like these, put them on your website.
- Themes. If you ask for a colour, a theme or "festival", explain it with an example or two, or most guests will play it safe.
How to word your dress code
Keep the invitation short and put the detail on your wedding website. Lines you can copy:
Dress code: cocktail.
Dress: lounge suit. The ceremony is on the lawn, so block heels or flats are your friend.
Black tie. We can't wait to see you dressed up.
Smart casual and comfortable: we're in a paddock, and there'll be dancing.
Beach casual. We'll be on the sand at sunset, so bring sunglasses and a layer for later.
For the rest of the invitation, our wedding invitation wording guide has formal, relaxed and modern examples.
Put it where guests will look
Guests check what to wear the week before, usually on their phone. A dress code section on your wedding website, with the setting and a note about the weather, answers the question once, so you don't get the same text message forty times.
